Vulnerability Survey – Kelly & Mr. J

February 23, 2011

Today in class we did a special exercise addressing the fact that people in an elevator will always move as far away from each other as possible. We and a partner (or group of three) had to sit with our knees touching for about 30 seconds.

We weren’t allowed to look away.

Kelsey

We’re talking about vulnerability this week in our class, in preparation for writing This I Believe essays.

We would love to hear from you, and as many people as we can find to answer this survey. Please share our Google Form with anyone you think might be able to share their thoughts with us! These are challenging, but reflective and revealing questions to discuss, and we look forward to putting your inspiration into action in our own exploration in belief and collaborative expression in the coming weeks.

TALONS Vulnerability Survey

  • How old are you?
  • Where are you from?
  • Are you a risk-taker?
  • What are you afraid of?
  • How did you deal with the situation in the last question?

Answer one, a few, or all of our questions, if you wish / want / can. We’ll appreciate whatever you might be able to share!

    *How old are you?
    25

    *Where are you from?
    Ripon, North Yorkshire

*What situations, people, or settings make you uncomfortable, nervous or shy?
Being in classes full of adults- nervous! Shy- not really- I’m quiet when I meet new people as I like to ‘suss them out’ first and then I can often be mistaken for being shy which annoys me! I’m uncomfortable when I feel like others are judging me- I’m fairly middle class, well-educated, well spoken- I get judged for this.

Are there times or situations when you have felt confident or powerful, or when you have felt out of place or uncomfortable?

See above for out of place or feeling uncomfortable. Confident or powerful- NEVER! I’m striving for it and I’m told that I’m young and it will come. Another pet hate- you’re never too young to desire confidence or feel powerful!

    Are you a risk-taker?
    Not at all! Well…

Are there situations where you are more likely to take risks? Less likely?
I don’t like doing active things that might put my life in danger… or where I might get a small cut or bruise! I don’t EVER eat anything out of date.
I do take risks in my classroom though.. all the time. Some pay off, some don’t but I survive to tell the tale each and every time!

    What are you afraid of?
    Butterflies, goldfish, cats, horses, failure.

Can you think of a time when you felt vulnerable, uncomfortable, or awkward? A specific time. One that actually happened.

Recently on my PGCE course I wanted to contribute to a seminar about a reading we’d done at home. Everyone else had quite a surface view of the article and I’d delved a little deeper… I felt uncomfortable and thought my peers wouldn’t have understood my views or appreciated them.

How did you deal with the situation in the last question?
I didn’t share my views and made a conscious effort to avoid the gaze of my tutor so that I wouldn’t have to try and explain my views. I felt uncomfortable because something inside me really wanted to speak up, I just felt like I couldn’t.
